SIP is a very good way of investing if you are looking at long term investments and especially if you want to avoid losses as your investments are spread across market ups and downs.

But through, your question I realize that you have lower risk appetite - I would suggest that you go in for instruments which have a mix of debt and equity.

You consider monthly income plans which have a 10%-15% equity component or balanced funds which has 65% equity component.

Systematic investment plan is one and major way to create wealth. Equity investment is main for wealth creation. And SIP is a vehicle for this. Here you don’t have to time the market and have an advantage of rupee cost averaging. I read an good article in a website called www.want2rich.com. I am sharing the link: http://www.want2rich.com/2011/05/personal-finance/the-power-of-systematic-investment-plan/ . It can be helpful for you.

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is an investment option that allows you to set aside money in regular installments, instead of investing one big lump sum amount. An SIP gives you the ease of viewing your investment commitment like any other monthly or daily expense that you have. Say for instance, you visit the movies once a month, that is a monthly cost of Rs 500 for a theatre ticket, or you have a cappuccino once a day, that is Rs 50 daily.

There is nothing called "No Risk" in this world. We have seen too big to fail banks failing, rating agencies going wrong, Countries going bankrupt.

So If you fear then do not invest in stock market, not even in MFs. All there averages on hind site look good. No one is really benefitted from them so far.

I am a long term Investor, but I suggest MFs/SIPs are not for faint hearted. Know your risk taking ability first. more you fear; More you loose.
