Is there any benifit with ULIP plans

ULIPs have the following benefits:

1) Potential benefits to cover up for inflation and give you incremental returns.

2) Multiple funds to give you flexibility in choosing investments based on your risk profile.

3) Transparency in operations by insurers as compared to traditional plans.

4) Flexibilities to manage your policy with the help of switches, partial withdrawals, cover continuance after policy lapse

Thanks for your valuable advice but dont you thing that the allocation charges in Ulip Plans are very high in the 1st Year.
I think rather then taking a ulip you can choose Mutual Funds & insurance sapretly. If i want to do some investment i'll take advice from mutual fund expert rather that taking a ULIP Plan

Hi Rahul,

Yes, There are some ULIPs where the premium allocation charges are high in the initial year but that should not be your decision making criteria for investing in a ULIP or choosing a mutual over ULIP. You need to take into account the cost incurred over the policy term and not only initially or once.

e.g. in a 20 year ULIP if the initial Premium Allocation charge is say 30 % and is on a reducing basis from year 2 and moreover from year 8 onwards the charges are nil, then the average cost of investment during the full tenure is much less than 30%.

Also while the initial charges in a mutual funds are low but the recurring nature of these charges over a comparable term for the ULIP makes ULIPs cheaper or comparable in cost to the mutual fund.

An added advantage for investing in a ULIP over mutual funds is the instant asset creation (by way of Sum Assured payable on death) to support the family in case of occurence of an uncertainty.

So rather than just going by overall charges, you should check all the details not only in terms of cost but also the benefits accrued which should be the basis of your investment decision.

ULIPs essentially combine the benefits of an insurance policy and a market-linked investment. A certain proportion of the premium paid is invested in market-linked instruments like equities and bonds (in line with the stated mandate) and the balance is used to provide for the expenses incurred on providing the investor with an insurance cover. Like most other products in the tax-saving segment, ULIPs are also designed to achieve the twin objectives of tax benefits and capital appreciation.

In ULIPs if you feel the charges are very high, go for single premium investment in that where the allocation charges are very low.

I can suggest LIC's Market Plus-I, which you can take With or Without Risk Cover. Four Fund Options: Bond, Secure, Balanced & Growth. Allocation charges are 3.3% only for a Single Premium policy. This can also be reduced. There is a tool to reduce Allocation charges in ULIPs for regular mode as well.
