Is anyone aware of the laws and rules for medical insurance in India.

I am an NRI and have had medical insurance for my folks for the past 2 years now through Sahara Care - TPA Alankit.

I got an email from them today indicating that "This mail is to express our deep regret that owing to our management discretion, your membership is subject to be not renewed for another a year-term. We appreciate you for being a privileged silver member of ours and hope you have enjoyed the value addition services(VAS) attached to the membership at their most".

Does anyone know if this is even allowed. I am guessing either they didn't like my emails that I sent them since they would take 2-3 months to resolve a claim and were very disorganized or insuring my mum ( who is a dialysis patient ) was too much of a loss for them

Suggest that you speak with the agency and demand an explanation. Ideally, the TPA should inform you in advance or at least give you a concrete reason before taking any action.

I have heard that Max does not go thru the TPAs? Does that have any advantage?

Yes, they don't operate via TPAs. First hand information is always good since it may make things a bit easier and simple to understand for most. What's most important is that you should get satisfactory answers to your doubts and queries and choose the best plan that suits your requirements. that's my take... at the same time it would be wrong to rule out TPAs.. completely..
